West Coast Accommodation and Activities

The advantages of staying at Paramata Lodge accommodation on the West Coast, South Island of New Zealand, are multiple. It’s spacious, peaceful and artful which is so appealing and it’s near a range of activities that brings out the best the West Coast has to offer.

Like slow food where you enjoy it more because you are not rushing from one bite to the next, try slow tourism. Rather than stay every night in a different location where you forget most of them at the end of your holiday, stay three nights and really relax. Don’t rush but get help to choose your activities wisely.

After a peaceful night sleep a tap on your door will get you up as planned to witness from the deck, the dawn chorus, joyous bird songs right outside the lodge where the indigenous forest surrounds you. Your host Kathy will identify and highlight their features and you can tick them off your Paramata Lodge bird list.

Over breakfast there’s time for final touches to your day’s itinerary. Your lodge hosts will help so there is no need to rush but if you plan wisely you’ll make the most of every day.

Paramata Lodge has tours, walking and kayaking, farm animals to visit and a sculptural garden. The history comes alive with stories of origins.

Drive half an hour to Hokitika for a cafe lunch, stroll the beach to Sunset Point at the river mouth to catch the views of the mountains. Then drive to the Hokitika Gorge where a one-hour walking loop track crosses the gorge twice by massive swing bridges then passes through magnificent untouched ancient forest. Another option as you return to Paramata Lodge is the Treetop Walk with mountain and lake views.

How about a boat cruise at Mahinapua for a look at protected wetlands, waterways and forested lake, choose a fine weather day and view the magnificent Southern Alps backdrop. Drive to Okarito and take a guided boat trip to see the wading birds, the famous Godwits might just be feeding up for their return journey across the Pacific. Or join a White Heron (Kotuku) Sanctuary Tour to visit the only breeding site in the world, these birds are special with their magnificent breeding plumage. Have you seen a kiwi in the wild? Most of us haven’t and we’re Kiwis! At Okarito you can take a Kiwi Tour in the evening to see kiwi in the wild. A truly rare experience.

If you’ve never taken a flight near New Zealand’s highest mountains, you should do it from the West Coast to get the grandness of the mountain to sea views. Flights and heli-hikes depart from Franz Josef and Whataroa daily. When you’re ready to drop into that relaxing lounge, return to the luxury Paramata lodge where a delicious multi course healthy dinner awaits you. A good time to share your stories and plan another day. At Paramata Lodge we’ll help you choose activities that suit your style and match the weather and environmental conditions that make best use of the day. Book Paramata Lodge.
