Top 5 Tips for planning your South Island Road Trip
1. Allow flexibility for weather
The South Island is split vertically in-half by the Southern Alps. This means the weather on the East side of the Island can be completely different from the West side.
As a result, it’s really common for people to want to change their existing plans through the trip. Having flexible, cancellable accommodation bookings will give you peace of mind to change with the weather and follow that sunshine or snow, depending on what you enjoy.
2. Plan more time on the West Coast than you think
The biggest mistake people make in planning their South Island Road Trip is spending too much time on the East Coast.
While there are less towns on the West Coast, there’s more variety and more to do. From sprawling beaches that feel private, to ancient rainforests and glaciers, to subtropical forest and unique pancake rock blow holes. All accessible from the comfort of your car and short, easy walks.
The feedback that comes up over and over again: “We wish we had more time here. We need to come back.”
Save yourself the heartache and extend your time on the West Coast by a few days.
3. Prioritise what you really want to see
When you’ve been dreaming of a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter flight and ice walk on a glacier, it can be disappointing when the cloud rolls in and the trip is cancelled.
At times like that, you’ll be glad you planned an extra weather day so you have another chance to take off.
So think about the activities you don’t want to miss and consider an extra day in the area just in case. What would you be willing to compromise on to really get the dream moment?
4. Allow extra driving time over the mountain passes
Checking your route on google maps can provide up-to-date traffic information and pretty good estimated drive times. But it’s worth adding a bit more time in the margin.
The Alpine Highways are spectacular with varied and changing scenery along the way. New Zealand squeezes a lot into a small space. You’re going to want to pause along the way to take in the view and take some pictures.
Haast Pass and Arthurs Pass have many beautiful forest walks to waterfalls – many of which are 2-10 minutes and worth stopping for. These are well signposted.
There are also scenic lookouts, turquoise rivers, vibrant green valleys and unique rocky landscapes.
5. Plan a couple of relaxing days
South Island Road Trips can be really busy. There’s a lot to see and do and driving can be more exhausting than we initially think.
Having a couple of days at a nest like Paramata Lodge can be the perfect way to catch your breath before jumping into the next round of adventure.
Bask in the sunshine on the deck, explore the beach and ancient forest, relax in the library and allow Kathy to cater for you. Her son is a Michelin-trained chef and she’s learned a thing or two. You’ll be glad you did.
