A Summer Playground for Birds (and Birdwatchers)

If you’re staying at the lodge, you don’t have to go far for a close encounter with nature. Welcome Swallows nest right on the lodge building. Out in the forest, the delicate Grey Warblers add movement and song, flitting from branch to branch. They’re tiny, but keep watch—you’ll see them darting through the trees. You might also hear the enchanting songs of the Shining Cuckoo and Longtail Cuckoo, though spotting them can be tricky. These shy birds have a habit of laying their eggs in the nests of Grey Warblers, adding a hint of mystery to the forest as their voices echo through the trees.

Thanks to Neil, one of Paramata Lodge’s hosts, who has worked on the property’s habitat, there are even more birds calling this place home. Neil, a contemporary New Zealand artist and sculptor, has cultivated areas for native plants and birds to thrive, creating a sanctuary that’s become a bit of a paradise for wildlife. Among his “regulars” are the Kereru, with their hefty frames and striking presence; they’re often seen perched on branches that dip under their weight.
