Luxury Stay with Purpose: Champion Conservation at Paramata Lodge
At Paramata Lodge, your stay goes beyond enjoying luxury and tranquility in the beautiful Westland. Every visit directly supports our mission to conserve the precious wetlands and forests that surround us. We are deeply grateful to our mindful and generous guests whose choices make a significant impact on environmental conservation.
Kathy, your host at Paramata Lodge, has dedicated many years to environmental conservation. Her commitment to preserving nature has been recognized through her extensive volunteer work, particularly with the NZ Forest and Bird Protection Society. Last year, she was honored with the prestigious Old Blue award for exceptional service to conservation at their Centennial celebration.
Celebrating Conservation Efforts
One of the remarkable projects Kathy has supported this year is the Forest and Bird “In This Light” a 26 Forest and Bird Centennial Project. This initiative brought together 26 writers and artists to celebrate Forest and Bird’s 100th anniversary and inspire more people to nurture nature.
Kathy played a pivotal role in this project as a local contact for the visiting artist, Lynette Hartley of Christchurch, and writer, Richard Parmatatau of Auckland. A guided tour of the Forest and Bird’s Dick Jackson Memorial Reserve was organized for them, to showcase the importance of protecting the Westland Petrel nesting colony on the limestone cliffs behind the Barrytown and Punakaiki coastline.
Lynette produced a beautiful felted wall hanging of the Petrels and Richard wrote a poem in the shape of a bird titled My Taiko Whakapapa. These artworks are being shown around the country.
In addition to this project, Kathy has personally been actively involved in protecting the Westland Black Petrels at the Dick Jackson Memorial Reserve, which is a part of the only nesting sites in New Zealand for these rare birds. Her time and expertise in these conservation efforts are made possible by the support of our guests at Paramata Lodge.
