What's New - Birdwatching

Pukeko - A wetland native bird
In October 2006 we watched a lively group of five blue pukekos doing their mating rituals right outside the lounge windows. Jumping around each other and performing a marvellous show. Never before had we seen these birds so close to the lodge. During the building project they kept their distance, but now they steal the dog food and have been seen carrying duck eggs in their beaks to feed their young.

Weka - Native wood hen
Last year the first weka suddenly appeared as Paramata Lodge. Early explorers noted that wood hen were plentiful and easy to catch all along the coastline, however they had declined for some years and only recently returning in the Hokitika area. Now we have two running around gathering food for two chicks. It is likely that they will now get fully established in this forested area again.
